What’s New!

What’s New!

What is new with me lately? Hmmm.

Well, for one: I’m exhausted.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’d know that I’m a gal who really enjoys a calm, quiet life. I don’t crave constant busyness; I don’t thrive on pressure, or packed schedules, or racing here-to-there.

I derive no pleasure from commitment overload.

In fact, I kind of embrace ordinary, and I’m quite content when things are

status quo.

But these last two weeks …

boy, oh boy, how we’ve been movin’ and shakin’ and lovin’ it!

The Boy and I traveled down to DC two weekends back to visit The Man, who’s been spending a lot of time in The District overseeing a new project. We did a few tourist-y things {enough already with the Bug Room at the Museum of Natural History … oy!}, and a few not-so-tourist-y things {like walking through Old Town, Virginia}, and generally just enjoyed hanging out together at The Man’s home away from home.

We arrived Friday night. We left Monday morning.

And back home, no sooner had I finished with the laundry from that little excursion, it was time for me to ready myself for my own little private getaway: Stella & Dot’s National Sales Conference — HOOPLA! — at Marriott’s World Center Resort in Orlando.

Marriott World Orlando

Amazing.

I’m quite certain that even if you had nothing to do with this company or its gorgeous baubles, you’d say the weekend was worth every penny, considering the inspiration offered by those speaking, including our founder, Jessica Herrin, who, before turning Stella & Dot into an industry powerhouse, co-founded, by the ripe old age of 24, a little place on the inter webs called WeddingChannel.com.

Girl knew a few things about perseverance, determination, and gettin’ the job done.

Anyway, I’m back now and happy to have had those experiences, and I’m readying myself {personally} for the rest of the summer with The Boy, upcoming baby and wedding showers, days at the beach, hopefully an amusement park outing with friends, and enjoying the gorgeous pieces I just bought from Stella & Dot’s new fall line and {professionally} getting the word out about those beauties.

To celebrate the launch, and to send my now-retired pieces out in style, I’m running a sample sale AND a raffle. I’ve reduced the pricing on the following pieces, which {for the most part … the only exception is the tote} are now considered “Vintage Stella.” Scoop ’em up fast, ladies: I’ve already said my goodbyes and am ready to let them go. When you see something you like, just email me and we’ll take care of the details. First-come, first-served.

In The Quiet

In The Quiet

My computer and I had some down time last week. Kept her mostly quiet and still.

I needed to.

Computer Pic

I needed to quiet the chitter-chatter of busy inside my head.

The shouting back-and-forth of

make your list

and

get it done

v.

slow down,

enjoy these moments,

and

listen for God’s voice … He’s trying to speak to you but you’re too wound up in

vacuum and pick it up and drop those off and

don’t be late.

There will always be projects and chores that we need to do.

But I’m amazed at how often

we add to our busyness needlessly.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. {Ecclesiastes 3:1}

When I slow down, I realize I don’t have to do all that my heart desires in this moment,

which liberates me to rest and

just be.

Which is often exactly what my soul needs.

Much Ado Monday : When Your 4-Year-Old Fakes You Out

Much Ado Monday : When Your 4-Year-Old Fakes You Out

The Boy’s getting back on the bus this morning–off to get all educated and stuff after a week of play dates, outings, and semi-junk food {thank you, February vacation} and I’m shifting back into my normal, everyday routine.

It’s gonna take some time, though. I forgot what it’s like to have the house to myself and complete a thought without interruption, so for this Much Ado Monday, I’m pulling out and dusting off one of my very first posts from 2010, back when The Boy was 4 and I was lucky if two other souls {not including my aunt} were reading tll.

Actually, I’m still lucky if that happens, so thanks to all of you who read, and especially to those who comment and say hello.

Just love you guys.

Don’t forget to link up your own posts at the end. xo

One random day earlier this month–after a very long and trying afternoon–Matthew and I were finally getting into a solid groove by the time the just-before-bed routine rolled around. I finished up dinner, got the little man into the shower off the kitchen, and straightened up the war zone that had become my house just a few hours earlier, throwing every kind of toy and book into the nearest appropriate basket, bin or box.

I let him play his customary write-a-story-on-the-shower-door-with-a-squirt-gun game for a few minutes before I ventured in to shampoo, soap, and rinse.

Water off.

I wrapped The Boy in a towel, and while I carried him upstairs to his room, he requested that for the remainder of the evening, I refer to him as a troll.

Ah, okay.

So I powdered the troll, put on his jammies, and let him watch a show, then brought him back into his room for some quiet time.

We most likely read some sort of brainwashing material about staying in his own bed all night (Back to Bed, Ed by Sebastien Braun is a new favorite), played a little bit, and then I tucked him in. He smelled so sweet, and his face was cuter-than-cute that night: eyes a soft green and his little brown hair all fluffy from the shower. He looked up at me and said “Mom, sing me a lullaby.”

Seriously, could it get any more Little House?

So I sang him

You Are My Sunshine, download Gifted 2017 movie now

and as he usually does, he sang along softly with me. After such a crazy day, it was a moment that was so welcome. I was trying not to get all weepy while looking at this beautiful little boy who was singing these sweet words back to me. I was so in love.

And then it happened.

We finished our duet, and he paused for a moment. I could have sworn that a Disney-like twinkle reflected off his eye. He looked up at me with a smile, touched my cheek with his palm, and said,

Mom, I wish I had Leo’s mother.

Yup. That’s right. He’s always had good times over at one of his best buds’ homes, and his little 4-year-old spirit just had to share that at that moment.

With that, it was lights out.

And it just makes me think: this is what motherhood is all about.

Looking into your child’s eyes and connecting in a way only you and he or she can, thinking this is my life’s purpose, this child right here. Then being knocked on your arse the next minute, and having to laugh through it all.

Because if you didn’t have a sense of humor before becoming a mommy, you darn well better find one now.
